Playing Breath of the Wild on the Virtual Boy gave me a migraine
Playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild on a Virtual Boy remake is possible thanks to the game’s Stereoscopic 3D Labo VR support, which splits the visuals into two circular windows. My friends egged me on to face Calamity Gannon while wearing the cursed goggles, but I was defeated by the lack of a specific setting and ended up with an ongoing migraine.
To cut the Virtual Boy some slack, the new Switch 2 accessory isn’t exclusively to blame. The trouble lies more with Breath of the Wild’s VR Labo support itself, and I’d likely have suffered the same fate using the seven‑year‑old cardboard kit. The original Virtual Boy’s aggressive red visuals — driven by mechanical oscillating mirrors and red LEDs — were harsh on the eyes, but using the Switch/Switch 2 display largely resolves that, and removing the plastic overlay filter lets you play in full color.
Even with the filter on, I could play chunks of Virtual Boy Wario Land without issue.
