Pokémon Go now includes Mega Evolution, which temporarily makes a Pokémon stronger and grants several in-game perks. Primal Reversion operates in a very similar way but applies only to Kyogre and Groudon. Update (Feb. 20): the guide was updated with context about changes introduced with Super Mega Raids.

Mega-Evolved Pokémon grant bonus candy for their type, increase the chance of obtaining XL Candy if you are at least level 40, and raise catch XP for Pokémon of the same type. For example, having Mega Pidgeot active boosts Buneary or Lopunny candy (that bonus is not multiplied by Pinap Berries).

When used in raids, a Mega Pokémon provides an attack boost to allies and an extra type boost to Pokémon that share its type—Mega Lopunny, for instance, boosts normal- and fighting-type moves. After a revamp, Mega-Evolved Pokémon gain Mega Levels, which grow the more you Mega Evolve them and increase the bonuses they provide.
