Prime Video Canceled Outer Range After Two Seasons Despite $6M Episodes
Prime Video canceled the genre-bending series Outer Range after two seasons, ending the show at 15 episodes. A report put production costs at $6 million per episode, a figure cited as making continuation difficult. The series held an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Josh Brolin starred as Royal Abbott, a rancher who discovers a dark void at the edge of Wyoming's wilderness. Tom Pelphrey played Royal’s son Perry, whose wife disappears and is presumed dead, leaving him to care for their daughter Amy (Olive Abercrombie). Lewis Pullman portrayed Rhett Abbott and Lili Taylor played Royal’s wife Cecelia.
The ensemble also included Imogen Poots, Tamara Podemski, Noah Reid, Shaun Sipos, Isabel Arraiza and Will Patton. Season 2 featured recurring performances from Christian James, Megan West, Daniel Abeles, Kimberly Guerrero and Monette Moio. Outer Range blended neo-Western and sci-fi elements, with time-travel glimpses to the land’s origins and a storytelling approach praised for mixing classic Western tropes with supernatural mystery.
