Prime Video announced on Jan. 29, 2026 that it has given a series order to an eight-episode adaptation of the comic Sex Criminals, with Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon attached to write and produce. Gotham scribe Tze Chun is also part of the creative team, and Nanjiani is set to appear in the series though he will not have a starring role.

Sex Criminals, created by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky and published by Image Comics, follows a couple who become bank thieves after realizing they can stop time when they have sex. The graphic novel ran from 2013 until 2020 and mixed comedy and erotic thrills. Gordon and Nanjiani released a joint statement celebrating the order: "Sex Criminals is the exact kind of thing Winter Coat aims to bring to life: love stories in weird places.

From the moment LuckyChap brought us Matt and Chip’s comic book, we knew we wanted to bring these characters to screen and are so excited to do that alongside Tze Chun and Prime Video." The road to a TV adaptation has been long: after the comic’s 2013 breakout, interest reportedly led to a 2015 deal with Universal Television that never got off the ground.

Now, a decade later, Fraction and Zdarsky’s award-winning work is finally headed to Prime Video. Peter Friedlander, global head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, praised the project as "bold, hilarious, and wildly original," and cited collaborators including LuckyChap, Winter Coat Films, and the comic creators.
