Producers Guild names 10 feature nominees, boosting five films' Oscar prospects
The Producers Guild of America announced the 10 films contending for its feature-film award on Friday.
The nominees are "Bugonia," "F1: The Movie," "Frankenstein," "Hamnet," "Marty Supreme," "One Battle After Another," "Sentimental Value," "Sinners," "Train Dreams" and "Weapons."
The PGA is seen as a strong Oscar bellwether: last year eight of the 10 PGA nominees were nominated for best picture, and the year before the PGA and Oscar lineups matched exactly. Five films — "One Battle After Another," "Sinners," "Hamnet," "Frankenstein" and "Marty Supreme" — have now been recognized by the producers, directors and actors guilds, a development the article says makes them appear locked in for Oscar nominations. The piece also notes that the guilds often favor big-studio films, while Academy voters may be more willing to recognize independent and international contenders; it cites "Wicked: For Good" failing to make the PGA cut as an example of how Oscar chances can be affected, and says international films such as "It Was Just an Accident" and "The Secret Agent" could still replace studio titles on the Oscars' best-picture lineup.
The PGA ceremony will be held Feb. 28 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles; beyond the feature category, the announcement also listed nominees in animated and documentary film categories.
