Movieweb says a single line from Qui-Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace—"Your focus determines your reality"—powerfully foreshadowed Anakin Skywalker's journey from promising Jedi to Sith and back to redemption.

Qui-Gon delivers the line to the young, Force-sensitive Anakin upon their arrival on Coruscant as part of a larger speech advising him to watch and learn so he might become a Padawan. The piece argues Anakin took the advice to heart: it helped him focus on training and attain Jedi status, but his obsessive focus on preventing visions of Padmé's death ultimately caused her loss and drove him toward the Dark Side.

After becoming Darth Vader he sank further into anger and isolation, focusing on the Dark Side and on the commands and desires of Emperor Palpatine, until learning Luke was alive shifted his focus again. Luke's refusal to embrace the Dark Side led to Anakin saving his son, succumbing to wounds, and becoming a Force Ghost, at which point Movieweb says Qui-Gon's earlier sentiment "starts to become surplus to requirements." The article contends that no Star Wars character embodies that line more than Anakin, whose power and troubled background made where he placed his focus decisive throughout his arc.
