There is no real history in the United States of fashion brands outliving their founders. The story here is more about invention than reinvention: if you can dream it, you can do it, and what once was is quickly ready to be replaced. When Proenza Schouler, the label started by Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, announced in early 2025 that the founders were stepping down, many assumed the house would close.

Though it had become a New York Fashion Week favorite, the brand had never quite managed to define American style more broadly. In June, Proenza Schouler appointed Rachel Scott as creative director, and on Wednesday she held her first show — tasked with making the house her own and proving a new designer could keep it relevant.

Did she? Not entirely. She showed she understood Proenza’s abbreviated history and shared its love of textiles and power clothing, but she didn’t break the mold.
