Rachel Scott, the new designer of Proenza Schouler, is set to take a bow at her first show for the label, which opens New York Fashion Week and is described as the season’s most anticipated New York presentation. The moment arrives about a year after her Diotima show and a string of industry honors, including being named designer of the year by the CFDA and becoming a finalist for major prizes.

She describes herself as an “immigrant, Black, queer woman with a disability,” born in Jamaica and living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and she wants to change the status quo. Scott aims to prove she can bring Proenza Schouler to a globally competitive level while continuing the work of Diotima, and to reimagine who gets to define New York fashion.

Scott officially took the reins last summer and has largely been living between the Proenza office and the Diotima studio, juggling samples, notebooks and late nights.
