Real Madrid target Nico Schlotterbeck after Upamecano contract talks derail move
Goal reports Real Madrid will step up their pursuit of Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund after their primary target, Bayern Munich centre-back Dayot Upamecano, was said to be on the verge of signing a new contract, ending hopes of a free transfer. Upamecano had been viewed as Madrid’s “dream candidate” because his contract was due to expire, but reports now indicate he will remain at Bayern.
With interest in Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate reportedly cooling, Madrid have turned their attention to Schlotterbeck; Bild says a move is becoming "increasingly likely." Schlotterbeck is under contract at Signal Iduna Park until summer 2027, and Dortmund are said to be seeking at least €50m, with some reports putting the fee nearer €70m.
The player is reportedly open to a move but has not made a final decision, and Dortmund would prefer to sell him to a foreign club rather than Bayern. Borussia Dortmund have been trying to extend Schlotterbeck’s deal for months and want clarity before the summer window. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl said: "We have been in good and trusting discussions for some time and there will be a decision in due course.
