Rebecca Ferguson’s ‘Mercy’ Can’t Catch Up to a 35-Year-Old Cult Favorite
Nearing a month after its release in theaters worldwide, Mercy appears to have sealed its fate. The sci-fi film marks Timur Bekmambetov’s return to American features and uses the "screenlife" format, with Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson in the lead roles. Produced on a reported $60 million budget, Mercy has grossed roughly $52 million globally and hit a roadblock around the $25-million mark domestically; it now stands at about $23 million.
The movie opened to poor reviews and earned just around $11 million in its opening weekend. Critics have been harsh — Mercy holds a 24% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus calling it constricting and tedious — while audiences have given it an 83% score, a split that suggests stronger prospects on home video and streaming.
To break even the film would have needed to top roughly $120 million worldwide.
