RedMagic Astra review: 9-inch Android gaming tablet praised for performance
ZDNET's review says the RedMagic Astra gaming tablet is available now, starting at $700, and that it changed the reviewer's mind about gaming on Android. The review reports the Astra delivers unmatched performance for an Android tablet, with a Snapdragon 8 Elite CPU and a 9.06-inch 2.4K OLED display that produced very smooth animations and fast app and game load times.
For gaming, ZDNET highlights the RedMagic Energy Cube mode, which offers behavioral learning, an auto-fan option, on-demand recording and performance tuning. The reviewer found a slight performance improvement when launching games from Energy Cube. The tablet uses a 20,000-RPM active-cooling fan combined with a 13-layer ICE-X cooling system, which kept the device much cooler in testing but caused the battery to drain a bit faster.
The Astra includes an 8,200 mAh battery that ZDNET says still supplies hours of gameplay. ZDNET notes the Astra's nine-inch size can be ideal for gaming and is manageable for everyday tasks, and that the tablet is offered in three configurations starting at $700, with up to 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage (the 1TB version is only available on RedMagic's site).
The review says the extra 4GB of RAM and 256GB of storage on higher trims were worth the price bump. The review concludes that this is the most satisfying Android tablet experience the reviewer has had and says it "is definitely the one to beat," adding that ZDNET doesn't see any Android tablet beating it any time soon.
