Kotaku reports Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi told Game Informer the title is not open-world, saying the development team wanted to "set the record straight" that it isn’t an open-world game.

Nakanishi said the main concept is combining the very different gameplay of Grace and Leon into a cohesive package, and that when players try the game they will see the team picked the best approach. Footage shown last month of a city street with cars and pedestrians had sparked open-world speculation. In its preview, IGN said Grace’s portions should be "familiar to anyone who has played Resident Evil 2 or 7," while Leon’s sections "stirred up our muscle memory of playing Resident Evil 4."

Rumors had persisted for months ahead of the February release date. Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline game in the franchise, will be released on February 27; Capcom’s previous mainline entry, Resident Evil Village, was released in 2021.
