In a Kotaku preview after three hours with Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem, the 30th‑anniversary title is presented as a blend of the series’ horror and action eras.

The preview argues Requiem feels like a “Greatest Hits” of Resident Evil, shifting between two main perspectives: returning hero Leon and newcomer Grace, with each character echoing different eras and playstyles from the franchise.

Leon’s segments play as over‑the‑top third‑person action. In one sequence at the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center the writer fought a chainsaw‑wielding zombie, used a sharpenable hatchet and later picked up the chainsaw, and relied on parries, stuns, kicks and flashy takedowns — portraying Leon as an “absolute tank” despite some shaky aim.

Grace’s sections emphasize stealth, puzzles and scarce ammo. The preview compares her gameplay to Capcom’s Haunting Ground, noting a handgun in her hands is far less effective, long stretches of cautious backtracking through the hospital, and only a handful of kills across about two hours. The writer also found some containers that were inaccessible to Grace could be opened later by Leon with his hatchet.

Capcom says the contrast between Leon and Grace is meant to create a cadence of tense atmosphere punctuated by violent catharsis, but whether that balance holds over a full dozen‑hour campaign remains unclear. Kotaku says we’ll know when the game launches on February 27.
