Resident Evil Requiem splits gameplay between Grace and Leon; ink ribbon returns
Polygon reports that Capcom's upcoming Resident Evil Requiem will split gameplay between survival-horror heroine Grace Ashcroft and action-oriented Leon S. Kennedy, and will bring back the series' ink-ribbon save system.
Game director Koshi Nakanishi explained Grace's sections are modeled on Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 7, with limited resources, stealth and crafting via a device that converts infected blood into a weapon; she also carries a powerful handgun called the Requiem that requires ammunition. Leon's gameplay follows an action approach similar to Resident Evil 4, using hand-to-hand combat and firearms, a sharpenable hatchet for parrying and decapitation, the ability to target body parts to disable enemies, and the option to snatch weapons including a chainsaw.
One difficulty option, Standard (Classic), requires Grace — and only Grace — to save at typewriters using a limited supply of ink ribbons, a throwback to earlier Resident Evil titles. Nakanishi said the game's zombies retain characteristics of their past lives, which the game's designers apparently want players to exploit. Capcom has not yet revealed the game's amiibo or its associated Fortnite collaboration; Resident Evil Requiem is bound to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X on Feb. 27.
