Ridley Scott's $403 Million Prequel Finds New Life on HBO Max
Ridley Scott's Prometheus, the 2012 prequel to Alien, follows a group of space explorers searching for clues about humanity's origins. The film features Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce, Sean Harris and Michael Fassbender, whose character returned in the sequel Covenant. Prometheus earned 73% from critics and 68% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $403 million worldwide against a $130 million budget.
Prometheus is streaming exclusively on HBO Max, where it has quietly become one of the top 10 most popular movies on the platform in more than 10 countries.
Scott has remained active in the franchise, producing 2024's Alien: Romulus and the series Alien: Earth. He first rose to prominence with Alien in 1979 and later directed Blade Runner (1982). Scott served as a producer on Blade Runner 2049 but did not direct that sequel, and he is producing the upcoming Blade Runner 2099 series at Prime Video, which stars Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer.
