Robert Duvall, ‘Godfather’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’ Actor, Dies at 95
Robert Duvall, an actor known for disappearing into a wide range of screen and stage roles, died on Sunday at 95. His wife, Luciana Duvall, announced his death and said he had died at home. He had long lived on a sprawling horse farm in The Plains, in Fauquier County, Va.
Across a career that began in the early 1960s, Mr. Duvall earned seven Academy Award nominations for acting and won once, taking the best actor Oscar for his portrayal of Mac Sledge in Tender Mercies. Directors and colleagues often noted his ability to inhabit characters; Bruce Beresford called it “uncanny, even creepy the first time.” He is remembered for roles including Tom Hagen in The Godfather films, Lt.
Col. Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now, Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird and Augustus McCrae in the television miniseries Lonesome Dove. Mr. Duvall also worked as a director, writer and producer.
