Robert Duvall, one of Hollywood’s greatest actors, died Monday at age 95 at home in Virginia. He became known for disappearing into roles while remaining himself; as he told Stephen Colbert in 2021, "You’ve gotta keep it within your temperament. Your anger, your vulnerability or whatever — it’s gotta be your temperament without stepping out of that." Born in San Diego, Duvall studied acting with Sanford Meisner in New York and befriended Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman and James Caan, with Hoffman becoming his uptown roommate.

He performed onstage at the Gateway Playhouse in the 1950s, made his film debut as Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) — a silent role secured with help from Horton Foote — and made his Broadway debut in 1966 in Wait Until Dark. The 1970s brought a string of acclaimed films.
