Collider reports that Rose Byrne won her first Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy last night for Mary Bronstein's psychological drama If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, which was released on January 24, 2025.

In the film Byrne plays Linda, a therapist on the verge of a breakdown as she contends with her daughter's illness, an absent husband, a deteriorating house and an unusual relationship with her own therapist. The win has also renewed interest in Byrne's earlier work, particularly the TV thriller Damages, which ran for five seasons from 2007 to 2012 and co-starred Glenn Close; Byrne portrayed Ellen Parsons, a naive law graduate who becomes the ruthless Patty Hewes' protégée. Damages is structured around one major case per season and uses non-linear storytelling, including flash-forwards, to reveal character shifts and plot twists.

Byrne received two Primetime Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nods for Damages, and the series holds a 91% critics score and an 87% viewer score on Rotten Tomatoes. While Byrne's recent film generated Oscar buzz months prior to the award show season, her performance in Damages is cited as an early example of the range and development that have defined her career.
