Ruben Amorim sacked as Manchester United manager after 14 months
Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge, the club announced. Darren Fletcher will take over on an interim basis and will be in the dugout for United’s Wednesday night match at Turf Moor against Burnley.
The decision followed a combination of poor results and a strained relationship with the club hierarchy, notably director of football Jason Wilcox, the Guardian reported. Amorim’s remarks after United’s 1-1 draw at Leeds — when he told colleagues in the recruitment department to “do their job” — were described as proving his final undoing. He leaves with a win ratio of under 39%, a Premier League record of 1.24 points per game and having lost more matches than he won in 2025, though the team had lost only once in his final eight games and sat sixth in the table, three points off fourth.
The club said its leadership had “reluctantly made the decision” to change the manager to give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish and thanked Amorim for his contribution. Fletcher is unlikely to be offered the permanent role, and bookmakers have been naming candidates including Xavi, Oliver Glasner, Gareth Southgate and Enzo Maresca as favourites, the report said.
