Ruben Östlund, director of the upcoming black comedy The Entertainment System Is Down, has openly revealed major plot details — including the ending — during appearances reported at the Göteborg Film Festival and in an interview with Variety, MovieWeb reported Jan. 30, 2026. The film, whose logline reads "Set on a long-haul flight where the entertainment system fails, the film will see passengers forced to face the horror of being bored," stars Keanu Reeves alongside Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, Nicholas Braun and Julie Delpy.

At Göteborg, Östlund divulged numerous specifics about characters and their fates; MovieWeb notes he spoiled the ending and what happens to each character. He also revealed smaller details such as Reeves playing an electrician who is forced to sit next to a corpse, and said the plane setting required the production to build the aircraft from scratch.

Explaining his choice to reveal so much, Östlund told Variety he is driven by curiosity about "how the film was made": "When I think about some of the directors I really admire, I like it when they make me curious about how they're going to visualize things. When I watch a movie or hear about a great idea, I don't care how it ends.

All I want to know is: How will it be made? That's what creates my curiosity." He added that changes in how audiences consume images shaped his approach: "Around 2005, YouTube changed the way we look at moving images because these videos always give away the ending in the title.
