Schnapp asked for added scene to close Will and Mike arc in Stranger Things finale
People reports that Noah Schnapp asked series creators Matt and Ross Duffer to add a scene to the Stranger Things finale to better close Will Byers’ relationship with his longtime friend Mike Wheeler.
In the penultimate episode Will came out as gay and hinted at a long-time crush on Mike, saying, "I had this crush on someone even though I know, I know they’re not like me, but then I realized, he’s just my Tammy." Schnapp said he felt there was a bit "left unsaid" after that episode, and the Duffers included a scene in the finale that was not originally there. While the group climbs the radio tower near the Abyss, Mike apologizes for being "self-absorbed" and not supporting Will enough, and Will replies, "It needed to happen the way it happened. I needed to find my own way," before they agree to be "best friends." Schnapp called the final exchange "completely closed and satisfying."
Schnapp also said it was "nice to have that trust" from the Duffers when he suggested the change and that he cried reading the scene, calling it "perfect." Ross Duffer said, "That was the intent," that Mike and the others would understand the Tammy reference as Will's confession. Stranger Things season 5 is streaming now on Netflix.
