MovieWeb reports the Scrubs revival will treat Season 9 (the Med School era) as existing in a different timeline and return the series to the original Sacred Heart hospital, restoring Zach Braff’s JD to a central role.

Braff told Esquire that JD is now "working as a concierge doctor," and that his return to Sacred Heart in the revival happens because "one of his patients has been admitted to Sacred Heart."

The MovieWeb piece says this retcon frees the revival to continue from the Season 8 era rather than honoring the Med School continuity; the outlet calls removing Season 9 from the main canon the right move for the new episodes.

MovieWeb notes that while Med School introduced some elements to the characters’ post‑Season 8 lives, the revival will largely disregard those developments. The article adds that JD had drifted from his old friends to be a more present father to his son.

The outlet also points out that Scrubs: Med School tried to shift the viewpoint to Kerry Bishé’s Lucy Bennett, but the revival restores JD as the audience’s eyes—viewers will experience the return to Sacred Heart through his perspective.

According to the MovieWeb report and Braff’s Esquire interview, the revival reunites JD with Turk, Elliot and other original characters when he returns; further plot details beyond that setup were not detailed in the interview.
