Secure SSD unlocks with a smartphone tap
The Lexar TouchLock Portable SSD is a super-thin, super-light external drive that unlocks by tapping a smartphone. Made of lightweight aluminum, it measures 3.37 x 2.09 x 0.28 inches and weighs 1.4 ounces. The drive has an NFC touchpad on the back, a MagSafe magnet ring on the front for attaching to a smartphone, and a single USB-C port on the bottom, and its outer shell is designed to survive a 6.5-foot drop.
All data is protected by a 128-bit AES hardware-encrypted SSD. Lexar built a custom low-power controller to prioritize reliability and reduce heat, so the drive favors consistent operation over peak throughput. Speeds reach up to 450Mbps write and 420Mbps read, which is sufficient for handling 4K ProRes 60 fps video recorded directly by an iPhone.
Setup requires the Lexar app (iOS and Android) and an initial NFC pairing: plug the drive in, unlock and set a smartphone via the NFC feature, then tap the phone to the pad to unlock the drive in seconds. Once unlocked it behaves like a typical external SSD.
