Frank Ilett, who vowed not to visit a barber until Manchester United won five matches in a row, may have been denied a viral haircut, but Benjamin Sesko’s late strike rescued a point and denied West Ham what would have been a deserved victory. Tomas Soucek’s low finish from a Jarrod Bowen cross had put the Hammers ahead, and the game finished honours even.

United lacked energy and snap for long spells and Michael Carrick made several changes. Matheus Cunha was withdrawn for Sesko on 69 minutes, and Diogo Dalot was later replaced by Joshua Zirkzee; only in added time did United finally turn up the pressure. With five of seven added minutes gone, an uneven cross from Bryan Mbeumo found Sesko, who flicked an instinctive finish inside Mads Hermansen’s far post.

West Ham left frustrated but with reasons for optimism.
