ShaniOS is an Arch-based, immutable Linux distribution that combines Flatpak integration with enhanced security features such as AppArmor profiles, firewalled configurations and full-disk encryption. Its core is immutable and includes performance optimizations like dynamic swap file creation and Nvidia GPU support.

The system uses a blue/green deployment built on Btrfs subvolumes, keeping two complete system states labeled “blue” and “green.” Updates are applied to the inactive environment so atomic updates and rollbacks are possible; a reboot switches which state is active.

Running sudo shani-deploy downloads and applies updates to the inactive environment, configures the bootloader to use it and ensures instant rollback if an update fails. In my test the deploy command completed in 7 minutes and 40 seconds. You can choose GNOME or KDE Plasma editions; I tested the KDE build and found a distinct, glassy theme with the desktop menu in the top-left.
