Sheriff rules out burglary in Nancy Guthrie disappearance
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators have ruled out the idea that Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance was a botched burglary and are treating it as a kidnapping. He pointed to newly released security footage that shows an armed, masked person outside her home the night she went missing more than two weeks ago.
Authorities have found no valuable items missing from the Tucson-area house, and the motive remains unclear. A ransom note demanding $6 million in bitcoin was sent and Guthrie’s daughter Savannah and her siblings have said they are willing to pay, but investigators say they are still trying to determine whether the demand reflects the true motive.
Guthrie, 84, was last seen Jan. 31 and reported missing the next morning; her home was treated as a crime scene after a trail of blood was discovered. Several gloves were recovered near the property, video was released of the armed person, and multiple people have been detained and released.
