Two weeks after Shifting Gears closed out its sophomore run, fans remained worried about the show's future after a slow December on the streaming charts. Season 2 premiered on October 1, 2025, months after the series was renewed in April and its Season 1 premiere in January.

ABC announced the Season 2 finale reached 6.90 million total viewers and a 0.99 rating among adults 18–49 after seven days of viewing across ABC, Hulu, Hulu on Disney+, and digital platforms. The episode marked the series' best audience since its fall premiere, rising 59% among total viewers and 154% among adults 18–49 in its live/same-day audience.

The February 4, 2026 finale put several relationships on the brink: Matt Parker (Tim Allen) dropped everything to fly to Japan with ex-girlfriend Eve Drake (Jenna Elfman), while Riley (Kat Dennings) broke up with Andy (Jesse Williams) after realizing her feelings for Gabe (Seann William Scott).
