The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were dominated by two studio films: Sinners, a 1930s-set horror fantasia rooted in Black culture, received a record 16 nominations, and One Battle After Another earned 13 nods. Acting nominees named included Michael B. Jordan, Kate Hudson, Timothée Chalamet and Teyana Taylor.

Both Sinners and One Battle After Another collected nominations in most major categories, including picture, director, actor, supporting actress, supporting actor, cinematography and screenplay. Sinners has sold $368 million in tickets and One Battle After Another $206 million. Both films were produced by Warner Bros., the studio that Netflix and Paramount Skydance are contesting to purchase, the Times reported.

Other films in the best picture race include Hamnet (eight nominations), Sentimental Value (nine), The Secret Agent, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Bugonia, F1: The Movie, Marty Supreme and Train Dreams.
