Skeletor will embody toxic masculinity in Masters of the Universe
The Masters of the Universe trailer packed a lot to take in, and it looked deliberately fun. Nicolas Galitzine captured both Prince Adam and his musclebound alter-ego He-Man, with a touch of Dolph Lundgren in the mix.
Jared Leto takes on Eternia’s bony-faced nemesis, Skeletor. Director Travis Knight described the villain as "cool, scary, funny, insecure" and said Jared approached the filmmakers because he loves the character and "wanted to swing for the fences."
Knight added that they ultimately "landed on something I'm really happy with," and called Skeletor "kind of the embodiment of toxic masculinity." The production even debated removing his skeletal features and hiding him behind a golden skull mask.
Knight was blunt about keeping the skull face, saying "That's just the way it is. It's a living, talking, emoting skull, and that's that." Masters of the Universe arrives in theaters on June 5.
