Skyrim lead warns remaking Morrowind may 'cringe' players, original code uncertain
Bruce Nesmith, a former Bethesda Game Studios lead and Skyrim's lead designer, told Press Box that remaking The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind comes with two theoretical problems.
First, Nesmith said he doubts the studio still has the original source code. "The game is so old. I don't know if the original source code exists anymore. If it does, can you even compile it?" he guessed.
Second, Nesmith suggested players might not respond well to the two-decade-old design. "Go back and play Morrowind and tell me that's the game you want to play again," he said, adding that while people have "fond memories" of pivotal gaming moments, "you go back and play a 20 year old game and you will cringe."
Both points were offered as theoretical obstacles to a remake rather than definitive statements about any planned project.
It remains unclear, per Nesmith's remarks, whether the original code still exists or whether revisiting the 20-year-old game would meet player expectations.
