SNL Imagined the U.S. Men's Heterosexual Figure Skating Championship
Saturday Night Live's January 25, 2014 cold open, "The U.S. Men's Heterosexual Figure Skating Championship," imagined the run-up to the Sochi Olympics. SNL airs Saturdays at 11:30/10:30c and the show is available the next day on Peacock. In the sketch, announcers Scott Hamilton (Taran Killam) and Tara Lipinski (Cecily Strong) explain why the event exists: controversy over Vladimir Putin's anti-gay policies has prompted calls for a boycott, so the U.S.
committee assembles a B-squad of less talented but "undeniably heterosexual" skaters. The faux competition sends out TJ Davenport (Bobby Moynihan) in a Jets jersey and cargo pants, complete with air guitar and an actual bag of Combos; Malcolm Barnes (Jay Pharoah) shuffles slowly across the ice; and Dino MacMillan (Beck Bennett) skates as a pair with his favorite Applebee's waitress, Shannon (Kate McKinnon), who has no interest in being his partner.
