Goal reports that Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly in contract talks to return as manager at Old Trafford, and Norwegian outlet VG says he could be back by Friday.

Days after Ruben Amorim was sacked on Monday, Solskjaer — who managed United between 2018 and 2021 and was dismissed by Besiktas earlier this season — is said to be negotiating terms that could see him rejoin the club by the end of the week. The report adds it is not yet known how long any agreement would last, with terms being thrashed out.

United are said to be considering an interim manager for the rest of the season, with Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher — who has stepped up from managing the under-18s — among the names in contention. Solskjaer previously opened the door to a return at the Oslo Business Forum in September 2024, saying: "If the family [United] asks, I would say yes every day of the week."

The report notes Solskjaer will be in Molde on Thursday for the funeral of coach Age Hareide. Meanwhile Fletcher is preparing to lead United to a Premier League trip to Burnley on Wednesday, leaving the club's next permanent or interim appointment unresolved while talks continue.
