Goal reports Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is to hold face-to-face talks with Manchester United over a return to Old Trafford. United relieved Ruben Amorim of his duties on Monday after 14 months in charge, and Darren Fletcher has taken interim control.

Fletcher took charge of Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Burnley and will lead Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie with Brighton, but his future beyond that match is in question and he may remain until the end of the season as the club waits to appoint a permanent replacement. Solskjaer is competing with Michael Carrick for the role: Carrick held preliminary discussions with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox on Thursday, and Solskjaer is set to meet them this weekend. The 52-year-old Solskjaer has been out of work since leaving Besiktas over the summer and is described as the favourite to see out the season at Old Trafford.

Fletcher says he has not discussed a long-term role with minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and that he only speaks to Omar and Jason — "I've not, no," he said. Pundits have reacted: Gary Neville warned a Solskjaer return would be like "Groundhog Day," while Roy Keane suggested United should pursue Newcastle's Eddie Howe; Neville also urged the club to "remove the risks" and pointed to managers such as Carlo Ancelotti or Thomas Tuchel as examples of the profile he believes United should consider.
