Polygon reports that Sony is remaking the 1978 "shockumentary" Faces of Death as a 2026 film starring Charli XCX alongside Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah and Jermaine Fowler.

The new movie, directed by Daniel Goldhaber from a script by Goldhaber and Isa Mazzei, abandons the documentary pretense of the original and instead follows a female moderator of an online video platform who removes offensive content and discovers a group recreating the murders seen in the 1978 film, forcing her to determine whether the acts are real in an era of AI fakery.

Sony quietly released the first trailer on Jan. 27 via a YouTube channel called sportsfan3456; the mature-tagged clip offers a collage of black-and-white clips that assemble into a skull. The 1978 Faces of Death, written and directed by John Alan Schwartz and starring Michael Carr as pathologist Francis B. Gröss, mixed faked and some real footage, spawned sequels and spinoffs and became a cult hit despite poor reviews.

Faces of Death is scheduled to be in theaters on April 10, 2026, and how the new film will compare to the original remains to be seen.
