South Texas Democrats Face Choice Between Left and Center
In Texas’ 15th District, Democrats are weighing a familiar choice: push the party left or rally behind the establishment favorite for the general election. The contest, which will determine the challenger to Republican Representative Monica De La Cruz, has crystallized around two very different candidates — Bobby Pulido, a Latin Grammy–winning Tejano singer with broad name recognition, and Ada Cuellar, an emergency room doctor running an insurgent campaign.
Dr. Cuellar, who has added a law degree to her medical résumé and is financing much of her own campaign, has vowed to push for the dismantling of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to codify Roe v. Wade and to expand health care. She casts herself as an outsider fighting local cronyism, describes herself as a “mama bear,” and has the endorsement of Representative Jasmine Crockett.
Mr. Pulido has courted a different argument, leaning toward the center while stressing rural and poor communities’ needs.
