Square Enix to re-release Final Fantasy 7 on Steam; original owners get free copy
Square Enix says a new version of Final Fantasy 7 will be re-released on Steam to replace the 2013 release, and everyone who owns the original can have the new version for free while retaining access to the old edition.
A message posted to the Final Fantasy 7 account on X says "the original Final Fantasy 7 will be re‑released on Steam to provide an improved gameplay experience," and directs readers to an announcement on Steam for "full details."
PC Gamer notes the Steam announcement offers more information, but the outlet also says calling those details "full" is a stretch — the post does not clearly explain what changes the new version will include or when it will arrive.
The article's author said he has reached out to Square Enix for clarification and will update the story if the company responds.
In the meantime, PC Gamer points out that Final Fantasy 7 is currently on sale on Steam for $4.79/£5/€5.19.
