Stanley Kubrick's final film is streaming free on Tubi
Stanley Kubrick’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut, is streaming free with ads on Tubi. Kubrick obtained filming rights for Arthur Schnitzler’s 1926 novella Dream Story as early as the 1960s and transposed the novella’s Vienna setting to 1990s New York. The movie follows a married couple (Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman) whose relationship fractures after they confess erotic fantasies to one another.
Though Eyes Wide Shut was Kubrick’s highest-grossing film, its initial reception was poor—a baffling D- on CinemaScore. Several factors fed that reaction: Kubrick died six days after a private screening that was billed as a final cut, the production ran a record-breaking 400 days, and Warner Bros.
marketed the film primarily as an erotic thriller centered on its famous leads. Kubrick reshapes Schnitzler’s material into a paranoid, fever-dream odyssey centered on Dr. Bill Harford’s psychosexual frustration.
