At the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy premiere presented by Paramount Canada at TIFF Lightbox in Toronto on January 14, actor George Hawkins said bringing a new species — the Koinonians — into the Star Trek canon was "such a gift," Collider reported. Hawkins plays Darem Reymi, who appears human but is actually a Koinonian, a being composed entirely of pure energy.

Darem is central to the series' early storylines, clashing with protagonist Caleb Mir in the first two episodes, "Kids These Days" and "Beta Test." Hawkins described Darem as privileged — "on a high balcony" with "a silver spoon somewhere" — and the show returns to the 32nd century established in Star Trek: Discovery while featuring cadets who subvert Trek conventions, including a science-focused Klingon, Jay-Den Kraag.

The cast also includes other nonhuman energy characters, such as cadet Sam from a holographic species and the Doctor reprised by Robert Picardo. The Koinonians were first referenced in Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Bonding," which said the energy beings came from a planet razed by war and tried to connect with a grieving boy named Jeremy, with Worf involved in convincing the Koinonians to bring him back on the ship.
