Starfleet Academy’s fourth episode, “Vox in Excelso,” which aired Jan. 29, reimagines the Klingons as a people devastated by the Burn and largely living in refugee camps, and introduces a Klingon three‑parent family for one of the show’s cadets. The episode centers on Jay‑Den Kraag (Karim Diané), Starfleet Academy’s only Klingon student, after a ship carrying members of eight Klingon Great Houses to a refugee camp suffers catastrophic mechanical failure.

The Federation offers assistance but the Klingons refuse; Jay‑Den takes the issue into the school’s debate class and argues for a solution that could give his people a new home without violating their sense of honor. Starfleet Academy co‑showrunner Noga Landau told Polygon the Burn destroyed Qo'noS and left the species “on the brink of extinction,” and said depicting refugees was important to the show: “There are so many refugees at any given time in the world.

It is a part of the human condition.” Landau also framed Jay‑Den’s pacifism and medical studies as a different model of Klingon heroism. Jay‑Den’s family structure — he has two fathers and a mother — echoes a polyamory reference introduced in episode 3 with cadet Darem Reymi (George Hawkins).
