Nbc reports Season 14 of Chicago Fire has put Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd through a painful arc: after their foster son Isaiah was returned to his biological mother and moved to Cleveland the couple drifted apart but ultimately came back together.

The split grew from competing pressures shown on the series. Isaiah’s mother wanted him closer to her care facility in Cleveland, and Stella and Severide agreed to do what would make him happiest. At the same time Severide became consumed by an arson investigation after he and his mentor, Tom Van Meter, were nearly killed in a targeted attack; Van Meter was intubated with extensive lung damage and Severide spent every waking minute on the case, leaving Stella to shoulder Isaiah’s departure and sparking a heated argument. Stella said, "We have been on two different planets ever since Van Meter got hurt," and admitted she hadn’t processed a miscarriage, saying, "Maybe I rushed into fostering fast because I just thought that it would make all of the feelings about losing the baby go away."

When Van Meter woke up, Severide realized he needed to be close to his family; he and Stella opened up to one another and he pulled her in for a passionate kiss, a moment the recap called a promising omen of happier days ahead. Season 14 airs Wednesdays at 9/8c and episodes are available the next day on Peacock.
