Storm Goretti brings 99mph gusts, heavy snow and travel disruption across UK
Storm Goretti has battered the UK with violent winds and heavy snow, the Independent.co reported. Gusts of up to 99mph were recorded on Thursday and a Met Office red wind warning for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly ran from 4pm to 11pm, cutting power to more than 44,000 homes in south west England and closing a runway at Birmingham airport.
An amber weather warning for snow came into effect at 8pm on Thursday and remains in place until 9am on Friday for the Midlands, Yorkshire and parts of Wales, with the Met Office warning of 10 to 15cm of snow and the potential for 20 to 30cm in some hilly locations, particularly in Wales and the Peak District.
Chief forecaster Neil Armstrong said Goretti would be a "multi-hazard event", with accumulations of 5 to 10cm likely widely, 15 to 25cm in some places and perhaps up to 30cm very locally. Warnings continue into Friday, including an amber "danger to life" notice for parts of the Midlands, Wales and the South West until 9am, and six other yellow warnings covering wind, snow, ice and rain with staggered end times through the day; a new yellow ice warning for Northern Ireland runs from midnight to 11am.
