Netflix is preparing to release a professionally filmed version of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the Broadway prequel that was previously confined to London and New York. On paper it expands access to the franchise, but making the play widely available now is a risky move after the series has concluded.

The play supplies detailed lore about Henry Creel’s transformation into Vecna — including his time in high school with Joyce and Hopper, a cave encounter with a scientist that sends him to the Upside Down for twelve hours, and the character Patty Newby as a potential anchor to his humanity.

Season 5, by contrast, left major elements of Henry’s past underexplored and at times suggested a different origin, such as the glowing rock in the cave, while failing to address the shared history with the adult characters. Fan reaction to the Season 5 finale was mixed, with many viewers disappointed by unresolved threads, uneven pacing, and character contradictions.
