The Supreme Court ruled 6–3 that President Donald Trump exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act when he imposed broad “reciprocal” tariffs in 2025, invalidating most of those global duties. The decision undercuts a central element of his second‑term trade agenda and could lead to substantial refunds, with estimates in the reporting ranging from up to $150 billion to more than $175 billion collected.

Democrats framed the ruling as relief for consumers. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called it “a win for the wallets of every American consumer,” saying Trump’s tariffs made life more expensive and destabilized the economy. Senator Elizabeth Warren urged that any refunds “should end up in the pockets of the millions of Americans and small businesses that were illegally cheated out of their hard‑earned money,” and House Budget Committee ranking member Brendan Boyle described the decision as a victory for families paying higher prices.
