I'm an American who's lived in Paris for almost a decade, and my time here has been full of surprises: long lunches, people picking up fresh baguettes often, and a steady habit of dressing more polished than I expected. Locals rarely wear sweatpants or leggings in public, which inspired me to build a capsule wardrobe of versatile, simple pieces — tailored trousers, jeans, white sneakers, silk skirts, plain T‑shirts, and tailored jackets.

Gym culture doesn't feel as prominent as it did back home. Many people run outside along the Seine or simply walk a lot; I joined a gym by habit but now go on leisurely jogs along the river a few times a week. Although I exercise less than I used to, I’ve never felt healthier.

Lunch here can be a production that lasts two or more hours. The first time I went to lunch with colleagues, we stayed from noon until 2 p.m., each ordering a three‑course meal with coffee. In the U.S.
