Sydney Sweeney told Cosmopolitan she doesn’t associate with the “MAGA Barbie” nickname as she responds to fallout from her American Eagle Outfitters “Great Jeans” ad, which dropped last July, and after reports she registered as a Republican in June 2024.

She also stressed she is “not a political person,” saying, “I’m in the arts. I’m not here to speak on politics,” and added, “I became an actor because I like to tell stories, but I don’t believe in hate in any form. I believe we should all love each other and have respect and understanding for one another.”

Last month Sweeney acknowledged to People that her initial silence on the American Eagle controversy was a mistake, saying her silence “has only widened the divide.” She said she was “surprised” by the reaction, that “I did it because I love the jeans and love the brand,” and that “Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren’t true.” Sweeney has not directly spoken about her political views, and whether she will address them further remains unclear.
