Sydney Sweeney's The Housemaid eyes $200 million global box office
Movieweb reports that Sydney Sweeney's R-rated thriller The Housemaid is tracking to top $200 million worldwide and could potentially challenge Paul Feig's 2015 Jason Statham film Spy, though it still seems unlikely the film will dethrone that 2015 comedy thriller.
The Housemaid, directed by Paul Feig and costarring Amanda Seyfried, was made on a modest $35 million budget and has now taken more than $140 million worldwide. The outlet says the film would be Sweeney's biggest hit since 2023's Anyone but You and a significant win for Lionsgate and Feig; Feig's last $200 million movie was the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot. The film's listed release date is December 19, 2025, with a runtime of 131 minutes.
Movieweb recounts that Sweeney endured a string of 2025 setbacks—Americana, Eden and Christy—with Americana described as a low-budget indie with little marketing, Eden credited to Ron Howard and later finding success on streaming without fully redeeming at the box office, and Christy debuting with one of the worst opening weekends in cinema history. The report adds that Sweeney has upcoming projects including a scheduled third season of Euphoria, a live-action Gundam film, and rumored roles in Scandalous! and The Devil Wears Prada 2, and that she ranked as IMDb's sixth most popular star of 2025; whether The Housemaid will exceed $200 million or overtake Spy remains to be seen.
