The Assassin rises to No. 2 on AMC+ after divisive reception
Movieweb reports that Amazon’s action crime thriller The Assassin is currently ranked #2 on AMC+, after debuting on Prime Video in July last year and climbing AMC+’s top 10 where it remained for almost two months.
Created by writing duo Harry and Jack Williams, the six-episode series stars Keeley Hawes as retired professional killer Julie and Freddie Highmore as her estranged son Edward, who are forced to go on the run when Julie’s violent past catches up with them. The ensemble also includes Gina Gershon, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Jack Davenport, Alan Dale, Gerald Kyd, Devon Terrell, Richard Dormer and David Dencik.
The series proved deeply divisive on release, standing at 74% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes versus 43% from audiences on Popcornmeter. The Metro called it “Mamma Mia combined with Taken, with a dash of Black Doves thrown in for good measure,” The Daily Telegraph said it is “Mamma Mia! with a sniper rifle, and it’s a treat,” and Empire praised the show and its lead. A second season is now in the works.
