According to Movieweb, in a piece published 25 minutes ago, Prime Video is quietly hosting one of the raunchiest and most scandalous thrillers in recent years: The Girlfriend, a six-episode R-rated series now streaming on Prime Video. Based on Michelle Frances's novel and released in late 2025, the series stars Olivia Cooke as Cherry, Laurie Davidson as Daniel, Robin Wright as Laura and Waleed Zuaiter as Howard, with Karen Henthorn, Tanya Moddie, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Anna Chancellor and Naomi Sheldon in supporting roles.

The official synopsis reads: "Laura's picture-perfect life starts to unravel when her son brings home a new girlfriend named Cherry; she becomes convinced that Cherry is a manipulative social climber, or is she just being paranoid?" Critically it fared well, holding an 88% Rotten Tomatoes rating; users gave it a 71% score and IMDb lists it at 7.2.

Despite the cast and premise, the piece says the series underperformed on the streamer's chart even as R-rated thrillers are enjoying a comeback and shows like Heated Rivalry currently dominate on HBO Max. At the time of writing, The Girlfriend has not been renewed for Season 2 and Prime Video does not release exact viewing figures, so overall success is unclear.
