The Librarian of Congress added 25 films to the National Film Registry in a list unveiled Thursday, including The Karate Kid (1984) and Clueless (1995). The selections include mainstream hits such as The Karate Kid, which starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita and inspired sequels, television shows and video games; The Truman Show, about a man unknowingly living on a soundstage; and the Pixar film The Incredibles, included for new design elements that better portrayed human anatomy.

Acting Librarian Robert R. Newlen chose the titles in consultation with the National Film Preservation Board, led by Jacqueline Stewart, and other experts. The public nominated more than 7,500 titles, up from 6,800 the previous year; The Incredibles had strong popular support, while The Thing (1982) ranked No.

1 on the public list. Other additions include White Christmas and High Society. Several entries highlight early careers and historically significant work: Clueless launched breakout roles for Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy and Paul Rudd, and The Big Chill featured an ensemble including Glenn Close, Kevin Kline and Jeff Goldblum.

Six silent films from 1896 to 1926 were added, including The Tramp and the Dog (1896), considered the first commercial film made in Chicago; The Oath of the Sword (1914), created by and for Asian Americans; and The Maid of McMillan (1916), the first known student film shot at Washington University in St.
