At the Winter Olympics opening ceremonies athletes will march in the traditional Parade of Nations at the San Siro stadium in Milan, and there will also be parades in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Predazzo and Livigno.

Milan is the first named host but lacks high mountains, so alpine events will be held in the Dolomites and other parts of northern Italy. Cortina will host downhill skiing, luge and biathlon, while Livigno and Bormio will stage snowboarding and ski mountaineering and Predazzo and Tesero will host ski jumping and cross-country skiing.

Organizers have emphasized reusing existing venues rather than building many new facilities, and most competitors are staying near the places where they will compete. Because of the geographic spread, each nation will be allowed two flag bearers who can share duties or appear in different locations, and Italy as host will have four flag carriers.

The closing ceremony will be held in Verona, taking advantage of its ancient amphitheater.
